A. Introduction
Thank you for selecting PixCat, another amazing product from MIDPA
Softworks. PixCat is used for printing a catalog of all pictures in a
NewsMaster(tm), PrintMaster(tm), or Print Shop(tm) graphics library.
Depending on the type of printer you have, and the libraries you are
using, PixCat prints approximately 56 pictures per page in a matrix 7
pictures wide by 8 pictures deep.
PixCat enables you to see, at a glance, the entire contents of a
graphics library. That, in turn, is a great help when you want to plan
your next newsletter or poster; Pixcat enables you to compare available
pictures to determine which would be most appropriate.
B. Hardware Requirements
Pixcat will run on IBM PCs, ATs, PS/2s and true compatibles.
PixCat requires at least 256K of memory and MS DOS or PC DOS versions
2.00 or higher. PixCat may run under other configurations but, those
have not yet been tested.
If you are not sure whether PixCat will run on your machine, try it and
see what happens.

C. Setup
Files that should be on your disk include:
PIXCATPM.COM PixCat program for NewsMaster(tm) and PrintMaster(TM)
graphics libraries.
PIXCATPS.COM PixCat program for Print Shop (tm) graphics libraries.
PIXCAT.DOC The documentation you are now reading.
PIXCAT.CFG The PixCat configuration file. This "remembers"
configuration information including screen colors and
printer type. If this file is not in your default
directory, PixCat will default to Black and White
screens using an Epson FX+ type printer. Once in
PixCat, you can adjust these parameters and create or
update this file by using the "Save Configuration File"
option on the main menu.
PIXCAT.CFP PixCat printer configuration file.
*.CFP (optional) Additional printer configuration files.
INVOICE.DOC PixCat Invoice/Registration Form and Customer Survey.
READ.ME General information and comments.
Ensure that your default directory path contains the "*.CFP" file(s)
and, if it has already been created, the PIXCAT.CFG configuration file.
Enter "pixcatpm" or "pixcatps" at the Dos Prompt to invoke PixCat for
the appropriate type of graphics libraries. This will display the
PixCat primary selection menu.
From the primary selection menu you can use the arrow keys to point to
a selection then press Enter to invoke it. You can also invoke
selections by entering the first letter in the selection code (for
example "C" for Catalog, "D" for Display", and so on).
The very first time you use Pixcat, and any time your hardware changes
significantly, you may want to adjust screen colors or graphics library
default directory (using the "Display" selection) or select a different
printer (using the "Printer" Selection).
From the primary selection menu, you can use the "Display" selection to
set various display defaults including screen colors and default
directory containing your graphics libraries.
Use the "Printer" selection to set type of printer you have.

Use the "Save" option to save "Display" and "Printer" selections to the
configuration file. Otherwise, if you do not "save" your changes, they
will be active for the current session only, UNSAVED CHANGES WILL BE
LOST WHEN YOU EXIT PixCat.
Use the "Catalog" selection to print catalogs of graphics in your
libraries.
Use the "Exit" selection, or Escape key, to exit PixCat and return to
DOS.
D. Setting Display Defaults
To set display and directory defaults, select the "Display" option from
the primary selection menu. The display configuration screen will
always be displayed in "Black and White" to allow for the possibility
that you may have selected colors that prohibit readable display.
The "Directory Path" line lets you specify a default directory that
will contain your graphics libraries. This is only a default, it can
be changed later when you actually select your libraries for printing.
You can key in a new directory or key in changes to the directory path
already displayed. Several "edit" keys and capabilities have been
provided for your convenience and are listed below. Included is the
option of "Overlay" or "Insert" mode, the current setting is displayed
above the "Directory Path" heading. In "Overlay" mode, entered
characters replace the character under the cursor. In "Insert" mode,
entered characters are inserted at the cursor by pushing all remaining
characters to the right.
The "Set Colors For" lines let you adjust colors for screen headings,
screen text, active data (data that the cursor is currently pointing
to), inactive data (data that the cursor is not currently pointing to),
active menu selection code (code that the cursor is currently pointing
to), inactive menu selection code (other selection codes the cursor is
not currently pointing to), menu text describing the "active" selection
code, and messages. You adjust color by "pointing" to a color setting
type like "Screen Headings", pointing to a color type (Background,
Normal, or Highlight), and pressing the spacebar to vary the color.
The "Sample" column shows the colors that will be displayed per your
settings.
Any settings modified from this screen will be active during this
session only unless explicitly saved by using the "Save" option on the
primary selection menu.
When in the display screen use the:
Arrow keys to "Point" to the graphics library default directory or
screen color setting line.

cursor to the directory path. If no changes have been
entered, Escape returns you to the primary selection menu.
other keys (a-z, A-Z, 0-9, ".", ":", and so on) to enter changes to
the directory.
PixCat will beep whenever any inappropriate keys are pressed.
When you try to "lock in" directory changes, PixCat will verify
adequate syntax; if any syntax errors are detected, PixCat will beep
and automatically position cursor at the first inappropriate character.
In some cases, a short error message will be displayed to the right of
the Insert/Overlay mode. For example "Need \" will be displayed if

more than 8 characters appear between backslashes i.e. C:\12345678\
would be considered valid but, C:\123456789\ would not be considered
valid. For C:\123456789\, PixCat would beep and position the cursor on
the "9".
If a path is specified but the last backslash ("\") is not specified,
one will be automatically provided.
E. Selecting Printer
To select a printer, use the "Printer" option from the primary
selection menu. A list of available printer configurations, read from
the "*.CFP" file(s) in the current directory, will be displayed (by
"current directory", we mean the directory you were in when you invoked
PixCat).
Note: if your printer is emulating another printer, USE THE SETTING FOR
THE PRINTER BEING EMULATED. For example, if you have an Okidata 192
but have it set up to emulate an IBM Graphics Printer, then select "IBM
Graphics Printer".
Any settings modified from this screen will be active during this
session only unless explicitly saved by using the "Save" option on the
primary selection menu.
While in the "Printer" screen use the:
Arrow keys to Move through the printer list and "Point" to a displayed
printer.
Home key to jump to the top of the displayed list.
End key to jump to the bottom of the displayed list.
PgDn key to page down; to display the next page of printers.
PgUp key to page up; to display the previous page of printers.
Enter key to "lock in" your printer selection and return to the
primary selection menu.
Escape key to return to the primary selection menu WITHOUT CHANGING
the previous printer selection.
PixCat will beep whenever any inappropriate keys are pressed.
